Impacts of Black Carbon Exposure on Children with Asthma
BRIDGE is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and is a collaboration with UCSF. Asthma disproportionately affects Hispanic/Latine children, with higher prevalence and worse outcomes linked to traffic-related air pollutants. This study will assess the relationship between a specific traffic-related air pollutant from diesel trucks (black carbon) and childhood asthma symptoms. Black carbon (BC) will be measured at participants’ homes and asthma symptoms tracked with a remote sensing device attached to the participant’s rescue inhaler. The study will also examine the participants’ geographic mobility (via GPS-enabled inhaler use tracking) as it relates to pollution exposure and will engage families and communities about the study.
