Uncovering Hidden Pollution from Everyday Driving
This study is funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to measure brake and tire wear (BTW) dust in disadvantaged communities across the San Joaquin Valley, focusing on high traffic areas (e.g. major highways) and more than 50 chemicals found in ambient PM2.5species (e.g. black carbon and trace metals). CCAC is collaborating with UC Berkeley and UCLA researchers to deploy outdoor air samplers at 45 residential locations between Fresno and Bakersfield. Samples will be analyzed by UCLA and the results used to model and estimate BTW exposures across the Valley. UC Berkeley will utilize the BTW exposure model to investigate potential relationships between BTW and public health.
